Friday, I Got Travelin' on my Mind

Friday, I got travelin' on my mind! Where will you travel this season? For a lot of us it's a time of year when we head back home to enjoy the company of old friends and family. We usually go out to Colorado in the winter, which is significantly colder than where we live. Naturally, I like to bring lots of cozy blankets and pillows for the long car ride! My other travel necessity? Jewelry. Being an absolute jewelry-aholic, I can't go anywhere without a pile of SoulMakes jewels. I've got to have options, right?! I toss all my favorites into a Wonderland Pouch, easy peasy, grab my camera and some tunes and I'm ready for a roadtrip!

October Flowers

This is the first time I've ever enjoyed October so thoroughly. Temperatures in the low country are still high in the eighties and sometimes nineties, dipping lower into the sixties and seventies in the mornings and evenings. There's a cool breeze here and there, the sun is shining high and some leaves are falling. But the feeling of summer remains steady. Each week seems to offer new and colorful blooms, especially along the beaches. Bright yellow tangles of wildflowers roll alongside the roads, while butterflies float from stem to stem. I've never seen flowers bloom in October. Normally, where we're from, this time of year is chilly and all the color in nature seems to slowly evaporate. It was always enjoyable at first, the change of seasons offered something different than the weeks before. But for me, those cold fall seasons up north quickly turned dark and bitter. So, you can imagine how wonderful it is for a summer soul like myself to be in this magical place, enjoying the extended sunny season. I spend my days off outside, wandering the islands, sometimes walking for hours on end and observing all the life around me. I'm especially taken with the local plant life, I can't seem to get over the way the palm trees mingle with cactus, amongst wildflowers and tall agave plants.. and all this, just steps away from the ocean!

Happy weekend!

Chucktown

A few weekends ago Trevor and I drove down south to Charleston, South Carolina. The city immediately greets you with a towering skyline of old church steeples, each one with it's own jungle of a garden behind beautiful iron gates. Old gravestones mingle with tropical greens and cobble stone streets. There's a bit of french influence in the architecture and design of down town's streets. The buildings are gorgeous, painted in various pastel shades of pink and green. Oak trees climb over top your pathway, growing in every directions, limbs drizzling with Spanish moss. The plant life is absolutely amazing. There's palmetto trees every where you look, and if you're lucky enough to get lost on some sandy trail you might find yourself inside what feels like a small glimpse of a rain forest or jungle. Even the azalea bushes, which litter the town, appear to be a more tropical version of themselves. Locals grow cactus and hibiscus plants, the sweltering heat and humidity make it a perfect place to get creative with your garden. Most of the time you're surrounded by water on pseudo islands. Lakes, rivers and ocean hug the shore from every angle. The beaches are gorgeous and covered with shells and fossils for miles. What a perfect place!

We fell in love instantly with the calm energy of chucktown and it's people. It's a bright, vibrant place while also remaining somewhat quiet and secluded. Personally, I love the heat. Humid heat is my favorite kind of weather. I've always dreamed of exploring thick swamp lands and living by the beach. My dreams are coming true! In a few days we'll be relocating to this little paradise down south! We are so excited for our next great adventure and so inspired by our future surroundings. It's going to be a wonderful place to call home for us and for SoulMakes!
