My Art History

Liquid Freedom

Making jewelry has become my passion, but for as long as I can remember I've been expressing myself through every medium possible. Painting is my true love or perhaps it's the paint itself that I love so much. Most of my paintings are nothing more than a basic experimentation with color. I think I've always admired the freedom of liquid matter, it can move about any which way, spread in all directions and merge with other liquids perfectly, which only seems to add beauty to it's contents. I love mixing paint, the ease at which my brush can turn two colors into one and then another amazes me. The opportunity to make any color in the spectrum baffles me in the best way possible. I love the way each color dances on the canvas, leaking into each other, hiding from one another, becoming a new, more intense version of itself. The practice of this art is like meditating for me. I don't seek to achieve any sort of accurate depiction or perfection. I go with the flow, I have fun, I relax. It's a wonderful feeling, one which I can't quite describe.

"Even now, all possible feelings do not yet exist, there are still those that lie beyond our capacity and our imagination. From time to time, when a piece of music no one has ever written or a painting no one as ever painted, or something else impossible to predict, fathom or yet describe takes place, a new feeling enters the world. And then, for the millionth time in the history of feelings, the heart surges and absorbs the impact."
-Nicole Krauss (The History of Love)

Healing Stone

Amethyst is the birthstone of February! It may be a little late, but I thought I'd share a little about this amazing stone. Amethyst has many meanings, as well as healing properties.

Amethyst was named by the Ancient Greek people, the name comes from the meaning "without drunkenness." They believed this beautiful stone would protect its owner against intoxication and instill a sober mind. It was known to the Ancient Egyptians to gaurd against the feelings of guilt and fear. They used Amethyst to open up one's spiritual center and aid in meditation. It is also accepted as the Bishop's stone and is still worn by Catholic Bishops, symbolizing humility and wisdom.

In more modern times Amethyst is used to help relieve stress, soothe irritability, balance mood changes and dispel anger, worry, and anxiety. It encourages selflessness and spiritual wisdom. It is a natural soothing stone and can help prevent insomnia. Still to this day, it is known as a strong protective stone, most notably protecting against addiction and warding off cravings. Amethyst is a healer of the body, mind and soul.

We have some beautiful Amethyst Necklaces in the shop right now, these lovelies are definitely big SoulMakes favorites!

Bohemian Jewelry

Amethyst is probably my favorite stone. It has much personal meaning to me. I first found myself mesmerized by its geometric shapes and variety of colors. I was in such awe of something so beautiful that was created by the Earth itself. Thus was born the first Leather Bound Amethyst necklace I ever made, which interestingly enough came to me in a dream (they say Amethyst promotes dream health). I later found out what Amethyst's meanings were, let's just say it all made perfect sense. Now I find myself growing more and more curious about the alluring power behind each different crystal I work with. It adds a whole new dimension to the making of my jewelry and to wearing it!

Dream On

(Photo and Overlay by me)

This weekend was unconventionally beautiful. We celebrated the life of Trevor's uncle. He passed away last week after a thirteen year battle with ALS. Although this was an extremely sad occasion, I couldn't help but feel grateful. This man was surrounded by his family through out his illness, they had the honor of helping care for him and spend time with him. Trevor's family definitely has a certain togetherness that I've never experienced and I feel overwhelmingly blessed to be a part of it. The service was incredibly lovely and it truly was a celebration of life.

I am so moved by the lightness of this life. I feel like I'm on the most wonderful adventure, following my dreams with my best friend and partner. I never imagined any of this would be possible, I never even considered that I might get to spend my days creating art and making a living. I'm so incredibly grateful for this opportunity and thankful to all our friends, fans, customers and followers who have helped SoulMakes get this far! You are all wonderful!!

Dream on..

Happy Friday!

(photo and overlay by me)

It's been an interesting week for us; some good, some bad. I'm keeping gratitude at the forefront of my mind, I have so many amazing gifts in my life to be grateful for, and I'm making a conscious effort to be here now. The most wonderful, spiritual, and inspiring place I can be is right here, in the moment. This weekend I'm going to soak up every bit of all the blessings around me. I hope you all allow yourself to do the same!

And if you need a little pick me up, check out our bright and sunny spring look book, we'll transport you to our bohemian wonderland!

Treasure Island

Cowry Shells

Bohemian Jewelry

Bohemian Jewelry

Inspired by all the lovely treasures that might wash ashore on the deserted island in my fantasy world, I loaded this collection up with cowry shells, white coral and feathers. There's something about the minimal feeling that the color white lends, perhaps it allows the imagination to wander off to simple things, like sunny days and sandy beaches. Our Spring line is full of darling charms, turquoise gems, quartz crystals and little hints of leather here and there. It's a little bit of everything SoulMakes, a mix of all our favorite materials. Pile it all on at once for that whimsical, Bohemian look we love!

Hope you're all having a wonderful week!
